          PART  FOUR: WRITING

          Section  A

Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.

When I opened my e-mail the other day, a pretty woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking with great enthusiasm. Every now and then she stopped to smile at me or blow a kiss. She was reading to me an e-mail from my brother, and a lot of it was about his getting the phone company to give him a high-speed Internet connection. It was pretty cool.

Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail. Facemail lets you send e-mail that can read mails to the receiver by an attractive male or female form or by a clown. The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www.Facemail.com.

Facemail faces are lifelike, and they copy emotions based on the ones that you put in your text. For example, type in X, and Rachel blows a kiss.

Life FX, the company that develops the Facemail is sure there are broad business uses. The reason e-business is not popular, the company says, is that buying over the Internet lacks the human touch. But what if you went to the Nike website and Michael Jordan greeted you by name, waited on you and personally closed the sale? Besides, the company is talking with Whirlpool company about the technology in a computer screen on a fridge. Then if Mom can’t be at home when the kids get back from school, she can leave a note with voice and image telling them what there is to eat.

Facemail could get hot fast. Personally, I am a fan. But Facemail should be used with words in an e-mail and add angry emotions when you’ve got junk mails.

          _____________

If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary as quickly as possible.Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text.        This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well stimulated. If a word really hinders you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then.I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image.”

To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then from your own ideas on some special issues.Try to scribble some lines-a very short journal, to express your ideas.Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors.Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing.

          _____________

Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English.Don’t merely take English as a “test”.Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning.

3.Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say “I’m working to remember names better.Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”

          4.    When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names.Free yourself from remembering every one.Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names.Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names.Last names can come later.

          5.    Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes.Sometimes just a few people show up on time. There are fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others — an automatic review for you.

          根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從下框的A-F選項(xiàng)中選出能概括每一段主題的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有一項(xiàng)為多余項(xiàng)。(注意:選E涂AB,選F涂AC)

          A.Think while you are reading

          B.Select a proper material

C.Five suggestions for achieving better results

          D.Read loudly

          E.Read on

          F.Use a dictionary at a right time

Effective reading should adopt a correct way, and then you can get more by paying less. Here are some hints for reading effectively.

          1.(         )

Don’t choose a rather difficult book or a too easy one for yourself to read. A book full of new words will make you feel discouraged quickly. To understand those new words, you have to turn to the dictionary quite often. .A too easy one will only waste your time and cannot do any help. The two extremes may at last make you give up reading. So it’s better for you to find a proper book with no more than five new words on each page.

          2.(         )

If you come across a new word, do not look it up in a dictionary at once.Leave it alone and guess the meaning of it based on the content of the text. This ability is quite necessary in reading. If you know your guess is right later, you will be highly excited at your “success”, and your interest in reading is well encouraged. If a word really prevents you from understanding the whole passage, turn to the dictionary by then. I am sure you can remember this word very well, as it has left you such a deep impression for its “troublesome image”.

          3.(        )

To comprehend what you are reading, you should think while you are reading, then form your own ideas. Your writing does not need to be quite formal but expressive. This practice can make you communicate with the original English authors. Day by day, your way of thinking in English will turn into a native way, which is quite important for English writing.

          4.(         )

Language has its own beauty, no matter Chinese or English. Don’t merely take English as a “test”. Take it as an “entertainment” instead and you will enjoy it through learning. Maybe you should find some beautiful literary works such as a prose or a poem to read, if you like. Try to read them as loudly as you can. During this process, not only you can enjoy yourself by the great emotions of the writers, but also your pronunciation and your manner of speaking English will be improved.

          5.(         )

The last but not the least, keep on reading. If you cannot keep it as a habit, you will suffer from paying without gaining.

When I opened my e-mail the other day, a blond woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking with great enthusiasm. Every now and then she stopped to smile and blow a kiss. I guess that the e-mail she was reading to me came from my brother, and that a lot of it was about the trouble he was having getting the phone company to set up his high-speed Internet hookup. Still, it was pretty cool.

Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail. Facemail lets you send e-mail that gets read to the recipient (接收者) by an attractive male or female form or by a devil or clown (小丑). The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www.facemail.com. And you can choose the face from an array (列表). If Facemail catches on—yes, I’d have to say that's still as if—it could change e-mail as we know it.

Facemail is about to get a lot more interesting. In a few weeks you will be able to speak into a microphone in your computer and have your own voice read thee-mail you send. The company has signed a deal with Kodak so that sometimes next year you will be able to submit a photo and your own face will be the one reading your e-mail.

The main thing Facemail has for it right now is that it's fun. That's no surprise, since the company's chief executive is Lucie Salhany, founder of UPN and former head of Fox Broadcasting. As its new capabilities kick in, Facemail could become a lot more popular. After all, what grandparent wouldn't prefer e-mail with the voice and picture of a grandchild instead of coldly impersonal text?

1We can see from this passage the Rachel  ________.

                  A. is a friend of the writer's brother

                  B. is working at a computer company

                  C. is an attractive woman hired to read e-mail for others

                  D. is not a real person

2How can you get Facemail if you are interested in it?

                  A. You can get it at a very low price.

                  B. You can send e-mail at www.facemail.com.

                  C. You can get it through Internet for nothing.

                  D. You can place an order at www.facemail.com.

3Sometime next year, you will _________________.

                  C. have your own face reading e-mail you send others

                  D. hear your own e-mil read together with your picture

4We can infer from the second paragraph that the writer ________.

                  A. doesn't believe that the Facemail would become popular

                  B. doubts whether Facemail will be hot soon

                  C. is sure that Facemail will work wonders for e-mail

                  D. believes that Facemail has a good market ahead of it

5The writer believes that Facemail could become a lot more popular mainly because ________.

                  A. it is convenient and fun

                  B. more and more advanced technology will be used in it

Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail.Facemail lets you send e-mail that can read mails to the receiver by an attractive male or female form or by a clown.

Facemail could get hot fast.Personally, I am a fan.But Facemail should be used with words in an e-mail and add angry emotions when you’ve got junk mails.
