          題目列表(包括答案和解析)

It was Christmas 1961. I was teaching in a small town where my twenty-seven third graders eagerly1the great day of gift-giving in advance.
Each day the children produced some new2— strings of popcorn, handmade trinkets, and German bell. Through it all she remained alone,3from a distance, seemingly miles away. I wondered what4happen to this quiet child, once so happy, now suddenly so withdrawn. I hoped the festivities would5her. But nothing did. The students made the fried marbles(油炸玻璃彈子)and competed with one anther to bring the6ones.
The day of gift-giving finally came. We cheered over our handiwork as the presents were7. All along, she sat quietly watching. To see her smile, I had made a special bag for her. She opened it so slowly and carefully. I waited but she8. I had not passed through the wall of isolation she had9around herself.
After school I sat down in a chair, hardly10of what was happening, when she came to me with outstretched hands, bearing a small white box, and slightly soiled,11it had been held many times by12, childish hands. She said nothing. “For me?” I asked. She said not a word, but13her head. I took the box and cautiously opened it. There inside, glistening green, a fried marble14from a golden chain. Then I looked into that eight-year-old15and saw the question in her dark brown eyes. In a flash I knew — she had16it for her mother, who had died just three weeks before and would never hold her or brush her hair or17her childish joys or sorrows.
I meant it when I whispered, “Oh, Maria, it is so beautiful. Your mother would18it.” Neither of us could stop the19. She threw herself into my arms and we wept together. And for that brief moment I became her mother, for she had given me the greatest20of all: her trust and love.

Blind from birth, I have never had the opportunity to see myself and have been completely dependent on the image I create in the eyes of others.
There are those who 1 that since I can’t see, I obviously also cannot 2. Very often people will talk with me at the top of their lungs. Conversely to this, people will also often 3, assuming that since my eyes don’t work, my ears don’t either. For example, when I go to the airport and ask the ticket agent for 4to the plane, he or she will always pick up the phone and call a ground hostess in a very low voice. "Hi, Jane, wave got a 76 here." I have concluded that the word "5" is not used because they are unwilling to inform me of my condition of which I may not have been previously 6.
On the other hand, others know that of course I can hear, but believe that I can’t talk. Once I became ill and was hospitalized. Immediately after I was 7, I was wheeled down to the X-ray room. Just at the door sat an elderly woman(judging from  her voice) asked the orderly(護(hù)工) who had been wheeling me:" What is your name?" “What’s your name?” the orderly 8 to me. "Harold Krents", I replied. "Harold Krents", he repeated. "When was he born?" "When were you born?"…This continued for about five minutes before I finally interrupted, "Look, this is absolutely9. OK, I can’t see, but it’s go to become pretty10to both of you that I don’t need an interpreter(翻譯)." “He says he doesn’t  need an interpreter," the orderly reported to the woman.
The 11 misconception of all is the view that because I cant see, I can’t12. I was turned down by over forty law firms, 13 my qualifications included a cum laude degree from Harvard Law School. The14to find jobs, the continuous15of being told that it was impossible for a blind person to 16law, the rejection letter, not based on my lack of 17  but rather on my disability, will always remain one of the most upsetting experiences of my life.
18, the Department of Labor issued laws that demand equal19opportunities for the disabled. The business community’s response has been 20. The attitude towards the disabled is beginning to change.
